When to Merge Two Lists

Merging lists is essential when you need to build a single master list from multiple sources. Common scenarios include:

  • Consolidate contact lists — Combine email lists from different platforms into one clean master list without duplicates.
  • Merge keyword lists — Combine keyword research from multiple tools into a single deduplicated target list.
  • Build a master inventory — Combine SKU lists from multiple suppliers or warehouses into one catalog.
  • Aggregate data exports — Merge ID lists from different database tables, API responses, or system exports.
  • Combine attendee lists — Merge registration lists from multiple events into one unified participant list.

How It Differs from Other Operations

DataMinus offers four set operations. Here's how merge (union) compares:

  • A − B — Items in A that are missing from B. Use when you need to find what's different.
  • A ∩ B — Items in both A and B. Use when you need to find what overlaps.
  • A ∪ B (this page) — All unique items from both A and B combined. Use when you need a complete master list.

Need to find missing items instead? Try the difference tool. Looking for overlap? Use the intersection tool. Coming from Excel? Read our guide on comparing lists without VLOOKUP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does merging two lists do?
Merging (also called union) combines all items from both lists into a single list with duplicates removed. If List A has [apple, banana] and List B has [banana, cherry], the merged result is [apple, banana, cherry]. Each item appears only once in the output.
How do I combine two lists and remove duplicates?
Paste your first list into List A and your second list into List B. Click the A ∪ B button. The result is a single list containing every unique item from both lists, with duplicates automatically removed. Copy or download the merged result.
Can I merge comma-separated or tab-separated lists?
Yes. Select the matching delimiter from the dropdown before merging. DataMinus supports newline, comma, space, tab, semicolon, and pipe delimiters. Your data is parsed correctly regardless of format.
Is this the same as concatenating two lists?
Not exactly. Concatenation appends one list after another, keeping all duplicates. Merging (union) combines both lists and removes duplicates so each item appears only once. If you want all items including duplicates, turn off the "Deduplicate" option.
Can I merge more than two lists?
DataMinus currently compares two lists at a time. To merge three or more lists, merge the first two, copy the result, paste it into List A, then paste the third list into List B and merge again. Multi-list support is planned for a future update.
What happens to the order of items after merging?
The merged result preserves the order of items as they first appear — all items from List A come first (in their original order), followed by items from List B that were not already in List A.
